PEN’Ashe Magazine: How long have you been a published author?
Mary A. Perez: Since Feb 24th 2015
PM: Describe your writing process.
MP: I jot down thoughts or ideas as they come to me, adding fillers later. I think about outlines for scenes and sequels. I concentrate on paragraph and chapter transitions to avoid getting lost while creating my raw manuscript.
PM: How many books have you published?
MP: One . . . so far.
PM: Are you a full-time Author?
MP: As much as I wish I was a full-time author, currently I am not. If not, what struggles keep you from doing your craft full-time? I have a full-time job that takes me away from writing 45 hours a week.
PM: How do you market your work?
MP: Through social media, book signings, readings, interviews and speaking events.
PM: What can we expect from you in 2016?
MP: Working on my next book project and keeping up weekly blog postings.
PM: What advice do you have for up and coming authors?
MP: Everyone has a story, why not you? Write and don’t stop! Add imagery to sentences. Include the five senses and dialogue to bring the pages to life. Find like-minded writers and join a critique group. Be prepare to have thick skin and able to take constructive criticism. But don’t lose your voice along the way. Finally, have your manuscript professionally edited.
PM: Thank you so much for allowing PEN’Ashe to feature you. Good Luck with your career!
MP: Thank you so much for the opportunity. It is such an honor to be featured in PEN’Ashe. My heartfelt thanks to you and to your wonderful readers!
